A late summer heatwave baked northeast Kansas early last week, but that did not deter the Lady Jays as they hit their home court where temperatures pushed the mercury into the upper 80s and low 90s. Sabetha hosted NEK, Cornerstone and Perry-Lecompton in quadrangular play on Monday, Sept. 19, and dominated to defend their home courts.

Senior GracieAnn Glaspie represented her team in number one singles action. She struggled in her first match against her NEK opponent and lost the opening contest, 0-8. Glaspie fell in her second match 1-6 to her Perry opponent before grabbing the win in her final challenge of the day against Cornerstone, 6-4.

In the number two singles, junior Alexa Kaufman brought her A-game even in the heat as she went undefeated. Kaufman battled in her first contest and won 8-7, which forced a tiebreaker match that she won 7-4 against her NEK foe. Kaufman blanked her Perry competition in the middle match 6-0 and then sealed the day with a 6-2 victory over her Cornerstone challenger.

Senior Kate Beyer and sophomore Audrey Tramp teamed up in number one doubles, and this combo topped their opponents to go undefeated with wins in straight sets. Their first match was a win over fellow Lady Jays in senior Sam Arnold and freshman Emily Arnold, 8-6. Then, this duo won their middle contest against Perry 6-1, before finishing the afternoon defeating Cornerstone, 6-2.

S. Arnold and E. Arnold played in number one doubles, losing their opening match before winning their final two matches over Cornerstone and Perry 8-3 and 6-3, respectfully.

For the number two doubles slot, sophomores McKenna Gatz and Karsyn Meyer opened with a tough match against an NEK duo and won, 8-4. They blanked their Perry opponents in straight sets 8-0 and completed the day unbeaten when they finished off their Cornerstone challengers, 6-1

“It was a hot day and the girls battled through,” said Head Coach Alicia Deters. “We had good matches to send us into a big tournament in Lawrence.”
