Cardinals ground the Jets in District contest

Junior Weston Schultejans takes on two Jet defenders for positive yardage in the game against Altoona-Midway on Friday, September 30, in Wetmore.

It was Homecoming for Wetmore last week, with the crowning taking place prior to the gridiron match and the Cardinals would host Altoona-Midway Jets on Friday, Sept. 30. Not to disappoint the royal court and the fans in attendance, the Cardinals made light work of the Jets, sending them back to the hangar with less than 50 yards of total offense and outscoring them, 54-6.

Wetmore marched down the field on their first possession and senior quarterback Dierk Hanzlicek scampered in from 13 yards out to post the first points of the contest.

The Jets were pinned deep on their first possession and as their quarterback scrambled in his oppositions’ end zone, Wetmore defense-man, senior Denis Speck brought him down for the safety. The Cardinals led 8-0 early in the game.

Speck also accounted for a nine-yard touchdown pass reception, passed for a score, kicked a point after attempt and threw for two more PATs.

Hanzlicek shined in the evening’s contest, punishing the Jets defense, rushing for 176 yards and four touchdowns, the longest of which was a 69-yard scoot. He also threw a touchdown pass and caught an extra point.

Senior Kyler Wommack was a force on both sides of the line of scrimmage, leading his team in tackles with 12 and hauling in an interception. Wommack had seven passes for 80 yards and three touchdowns, including the final dagger from 14 yards out early in the second half.

Senior Jacob Carls had three catches for 36 yards and two touchdowns on offensive end, and snatched an interception on defense.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in district play.

“It was another great district win, and great to get a win on our homecoming,” said Head Coach Miles Hanzlicek. “The boys played really well, but we still have a lot of work to do on our point after kicking game. We have a lot of preparing to do before Friday’s game against Waverly.”

Wetmore will meet one of their most potent opponents in the season and District on Friday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Waverly to take on a 5-0 Bulldog team that sits at the top of the district standings at the end of last week.
