Lady Cardinals improve consistency, show gains as a team
A young Lady Cardinal team has been mentored by its senior leadership and showed their competitiveness when they trekked to Washington County on Tuesday, Sept. 27, in quad action in a mostly Twin Valley League tussle. Spectators had the chance to see the hard work these young ladies have been putting in and witnessed their determination to finish the season strong.
Wetmore’s first contest presented was against the host school and number four in the league, the Washington County Tigers. The Tigers were 12-10 entering the contest, but the Cardinals kept calm and battled on. Washington County won in straight sets, 25-12 and 25-10, but Wetmore was focused forward.
Their next opponent was the Doniphan West Lady Mustangs. The Cardinals ran into a road block with this match and fell, 10-25 and 8-25, in a non-league battle.
Their final challenger of the evening was the 15-7 overall Valley Heights Lady Mustangs, and battle as they might, the Lady Cardinals lost in straight sets, 12-25 and 7-25.
“We have been working on becoming more consistent in our play and cutting down on our errors,” said Head Coach Cindy Osterhaus. “Another area we have been spending a lot of time on is our hitting. We need to be able to attack the ball more and put it away.”
Wetmore will have a busy couple of weeks where they will host their own triangular on Tuesday, Oct. 4, with Onaga and Troy in attendance, before a final regular season triangular at Hanover. Results for the Cardinals’ home invite were not available at the The Herald’s press time.
“I have been proud of the girls for coming out and continuing to work hard even when they are not getting a lot of wins,” Coach Osterhaus said. “We are making gains in our play each week.”
