Sabetha continued their fast-paced season last week when they competed in the Hayden Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and met some opponents from larger schools in the area. The Lady Jays took the challenge head on and battled, but the tallies in the win column were nil in singles action and the doubles teams picked up two wins apiece. In addition to the Bluejays and Hayden teams, Bishop Miege, Ottawa and Topeka High were in attendance for the match.

“With playing some bigger schools, the singles saw some tough competition on Tuesday,” said Head Coach Alicia Deters. “I was impressed with the way they handled themselves during the matches.”

Senior Sam Arnold fulfilled the role of number one singles player for the Bluejays. She struggled against her Hayden opponent and was shutout, 0-8. Against her Ottawa challenger, Arnold strung some winning sets together, but was narrowly defeated by a score of 6-8. She then lost to her Topeka High adversary, 3-6.

In number two singles play, senior GracieAnn Glaspie was blanked by her Ottawa opponent 0-6, battled against her Topeka High foe and lost 7-8, which went to a tiebreaker match where she fell, 10-12. Glaspie lost her only other match to Bishop Miege, 2-8.

Number one doubles team representatives for Sabetha was the combination of senior Kate Beyer and sophomore Audrey Tramp. The tandem won against Ottawa in short fashion 8-2 and also topped their Topeka High foe, 6-4. But they struggled against Bishop Miege only to fall, 3-8.

Sophomores Karsyn Meyer and McKenna Gatz helmed the number two doubles division for the Jays, and these two triumphed over their Ottawa and Topeka High challengers 8-4 and 8-2, respectively. Bishop Miege overshadowed the duo in their match with Sabetha, and handed them a 1-8 defeat.

As a team, Sabetha singles finished 0-6 for the contest, with the doubles team finishing the day a combined 4-2 record overall.

As the regular season comes to a close, the Lady Jays turn their attention to Regionals, which will be on Friday, Oct. 7, in Marysville.
