Jays weather the storm, top the Cyclones

With harvest season in full swing around the state, the old saying “you reap what you sew,” and Sabetha’s coaching staff has taken that to heart and has had their crew out in the field working to shock their next opponent. The Bluejays are 2-0 in District standings and they turned their attention to a Big Seven match with the Riverside Cyclones on Friday, Oct. 7, hoping to cut a wide swath. The Jays mowed down the Cyclones early in the game and put the hay in the barn topping Riverside, 56-0.

“We wanted to play an entire game and we did,” said Head Coach Garrett Michael. “Our kids played well by not turning it over and having less penalties. We’ve talked all week about competing against ourselves.”

Senior Josh Herrmann put Sabetha on the board with a six-yard scamper early in the first period to put his team up 6-0. Junior Nate Menold’s kick split the uprights and put his team up by seven.

Senior quarterback Matthew Garber airmailed the bean on the Jays second possession and it was hauled in by senior receiver Davis Rokey for 24-yards that yielded a touchdown. Menold’s kick was good as Sabetha led, 14-0.

Menold’s foot was pulled from the tool shed for a field goal attempt from 29 yards out late in the first quarter. Sabetha would lead 17-0.

Garber had two passing scores in the second quarter, one to junior Christian McAfee early in the second frame from 10 yards away and another to junior Marcus Bauman from 26 yards out. McAfee also rushed for another score in the second period, to boost Sabetha’s lead to 37-0 at the intermission.

The Cyclones opened the second half with the possession, but they had a breakdown in the field when Rokey stepped in front of the Riverside pass for an interception and took it to the house for a pick-six.

Senior running back Jonathan Renyer took the bounty to the barn early in the third quarter when he galloped into the end zone from 19 yards out.

Senior running back Abe Wehner put the tarp on the scoring for the night when he powered his way through the bottom ground to the end of the row and scored from 32 yards out in the fourth quarter. Wehner also had an interception on defense in the contest.

The Jays made light work of Riverside to put the win in their pocket for the night, sweeping the Cyclones, 56-0.

“Our scout team offense and defense have been lights out,” Coach Michael said. “They have made practices harder than the games. We are so proud of our seniors for playing on and leading the scout teams. We wanted to work on our passing game. We’ve got some work to do.”

Sabetha improved to 3-1 in the Big Seven with the win, 5-1 overall, and they share the top spot in their District with Nemaha Central, both sitting at 2-0. The Jays will face their next District challenger in the 0-2 Horton Chargers this week on Friday, Oct. 14.

“This week, we get back into district play and it’s a big game because it’s the next game,” Coach Michael said.
