Bluejays bring home Big Seven honors

Sabetha approaches the pinnacle of their season and this week was another rung on the ladder when they traveled to Topeka — in a meet hosted by Jeff West — Thursday, Oct. 13, to compete against their Big Seven opponents at the league meet. Both Bluejay divisions competed well and had harriers bring home All League recognition.

Freshman Charlie Lukert finished in fourth place in a field of 45 harriers and was the first to cross the finish line for the Bluejays. Junior Kalvin Evans finished fifth place overall. Freshmen Josh Enneking and Korbyn Stinnett finished 18th and 30th, respectively, and sophomore Tabor Bachelor finished in 43rd place. As a team, the Sabetha boys placed fifth.

For the Lady Jays, sophomore Laura Metzger finished the race first for her team and placed third overall out of 37 competing athletes. Freshman Jyllian Stapleton finished in the eighth position and sophomore Lauren Bowles finished in 22nd. Sophomore Ellyannah Clinton completed the course in 31st place and junior Emerson Montgomery was 32nd. As a team, the Lady Jays took fourth place overall.

“We have two all league girls, Laura [Metzger] and Jyllian [Stapleton], and two boys, Charlie [Lukert] and Kalvin [Evans],” said Head Coach Doug Leiker. “I thought our kids ran well. Next up, Regionals, where the top three teams qualify and top ten runners qualify for State, which will be at Rim Rock.”

Regionals for Sabetha will be hosted by Riley County and athletes will run at the Leonardville Golf Course Saturday, Oct. 22. The girls race will begin at 10 a.m. and the boys race will begin at approximately 10:45 a.m.
