Charlie Lukert, Kalvin Evans qualify for State

The Sabetha harriers ran at Leonardville on Saturday, Oct. 22, for the Regional cross country meet hosted by Riley County High School.

The Lady Jays ran hard, but could not crack into the top 10 places to advance any of their teammates to State. The boys had three athletes finish in the top 25 and included two athletes — freshman Charlie Lukert and junior Kalvin Evans — finishing in the front of the pack to qualify for State.

Lukert finished first for his team and in fourth place overall, which qualified him for State. Evans completed the course in ninth place overall — in a field of 88 male athletes — which also earned him a chance to run at State.

Freshmen Josh Enneking and Korbyn Stinnett completed the course taking 24th and 49th places, respectively, and sophomore Tabor Bachelor finished 71st. As a team, the boys came out in sixth place overall.

Freshman Jyllian Stapleton finished first for the Lady Jays and placed 22nd overall against a group of 73 athletes in the female division. Sophomore Lauren Bowles was 44th, junior Emerson Montgomery was 60th and sophomore Ellyannah Clinton finished the race in 64th place.

“We had a great season,” said Head Coach Doug Leiker. “The kids worked hard and got better throughout the season. We have two young teams and they should look forward to next year. We need to get a few more kids out and with the returning kids, they should do well next year.”

Lukert and Evans will compete in the 3A State race at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence.
