Sabetha falls to Royal Valley at Sub-State

The Lady Jays completed the regular season with a 17-20 record, which put them as the number six seed at the Sub-State tournament on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Seneca. With the seeding, Sabetha would draw the number three seed in the 25-12 Royal Valley Panthers in opening round action. The Lady Jays won the first set, but fell to Royal Valley in the following two sets in a knock-down-drag-out battle.

“The season ended on Saturday, but we went out fighting our hardest. Playing Royal Valley was going to be tough and we knew that, because they are a scrappy, hard hitting, good serving team. As we prepared for this game, we set our mind on playing together,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve.

Sabetha gave the Panthers an opening round upset when they won the first set, 25-23.

If they could take the second set, the Lady Jays would advance to the next match against Hiawatha. But the Jays got down in the second set and could not pull off another win. The Lady Jays fell, 15-25. With the series tied at one set apiece, the third set would decide who earned the chance to advance. It was a back and forth duel that was close down to the final point, with the Panthers stealing the win 25-20, to end Sabetha’s run.

Senior Mary Lukert had a standout performance in the contest leading her team in good hits and digs. Sophomore Erin Boltz was a team leader in kills, good hits, digs and serves received. Seniors Halle Scoby and Jessica Gruber had solid performances, and junior Alexia Hayden led her team in assists.

“Though our spirits were down after the game, these athletes need to remember the challenges we overcame, adjustments we were forced to make, competing and placing in the top four in three tournaments this year and finishing at the top of the league,” Coach Stueve said. “We need to remember all that self doubt we felt turn into confidence and pride and that we represented Sabetha volleyball to the best of our ability, and I hope every athlete looks back with fondness on their senior leaders and other teammate memories.”
