Cardinals take Regional win over Burrton

With an opening round bye, the Wetmore Cardinals had some extra time to polish their game before they hosted the 6-2 Burrton Chargers in the Regional round of the playoffs on Friday, Nov. 4. The Chargers advanced to this game with a 73-24 victory of Southern Coffey County, but ran into a Cardinal buzz saw with Wetmore scorching their guests in abbreviated fashion by a score of 63-7.

“These boys are continuing to make history here at Wetmore,” said Head Coach Miles Hanzlicek. “Their first playoff win and first District title. Despite the weather, these boys came to win. They played tough the whole game with very few mistakes.”

The Cardinals catapulted into the lead in the first quarter, blanking the Chargers on the scoreboard, and getting scores in short order. Senior Dierk Hanzlicek had an amazing outing for his team against Burrton when he put up nearly 300 yards of offense on 14 carries and found the end zone six times. Hanzlicek had scores from 42 yards, eight yards and 34 yards in the first quarter. He also had a pass reception for an extra point in the period.

Senior Kyler Wommack rushed for a 15-yard touchdown in the first quarter and threw for another one when he connected with senior receiver Jacob Carls from 10 yards out. The Cardinals held a 33-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Wetmore kept the pedal to the floor in the second period and scored another 30 unanswered points before Burrton scored their only touchdown of the game late in the half.

Hanzlicek had three additional rushing touchdowns in the second period with runs from 67, 14 and 21 yards out. Wommack scored on a 31-yard burst, and senior Denis Speck had a safety, passed for an extra point and kicked a PAT in the period to help boost the Cardinals’ lead.

Junior Weston Schultejans and freshman Landon Heller each had an extra point in the quarter, and Wetmore dominated their guests with a 63-7 win at home.

“Our defense was able to contain Burrton’s high scoring offense and our running game seemed to control the game,” Coach Hanzlicek said. “Great win!”

With the win, the Cardinals advance to the Sectional game and will match up with the undefeated Cunningham Wildcats, who are coming off of a 65-0 win over Natoma, at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Cunningham.
