Athletic Honors: Sabetha High School athletes earn All Big 7 League, State honors

Thirteen athletes from Sabetha High School were named in the 2022 fall sports Big 7 League and All State Honors. Those being named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2022 fall season.
Volleyball
The Lady Jays opened their season at the Marysville Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 27, and finished their season on Saturday, Oct. 22, during the first round of Sub-State against Royal Valley. The Jays finished the season with an 17-21 record.
Throughout the season, the Lady Jays tallied 2,296 good hits, along with 728 kills. They also tallied 1,415 good serves, including 180 aces. The team also racked up 1,425 defensive digs, 1,465 serve receives, 1,091 assists, 135 solo blocks and 62 assisted blocks.
Mary Lukert
Senior
Big 7 All League Outside Hitter
Mary put up excellent numbers for the season. Offensively, she tallied 14 set assists and 225 kills on 641 good hits, as well as 27 aces on 226 good serves. Defensively, Mary had 319 defensive digs, 282 serve receives, six solo blocks and eight assisted blocks.
Erin Boltz
Sophomore
Big 7 All League Outside Hitter
Erin was a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball this season. Offensively, she tallied 26 set assists and 172 kills on 570 good hits, as well as 41 aces on 261 good serves. Defensively, Erin had 305 defensive digs, 347 serve receives, 30 solo blocks and eight assisted blocks.
Football
The Sabetha Bluejay Football team opened the 2022 season against Perry-Lecompton on Friday, Sept. 2, and wrapped up the season on Friday, Nov. 18, in the Sub-State game against the Nemaha Central Thunder. The Bluejays finished their season with a 9-3 record.
Throughout the 2022 season, the Bluejays tallied 220 first downs, 508 rushes for 3,399 yards and completed 59 out of 106 passes for 864 yards. The Bluejays also tallied 4,263 yards in total offense.
Josh Herrmann

Throughout the 2022 season, Josh totaled 58 tackles, 1/2 sack, three fumble recoveries and 118 rushes for 824 yards for the Bluejays. He also scored 11 touchdowns.
Colin Menold
Junior
KSHSAA Covered Honorable Mention Running Back
Throughout the 2022 season, Colin totaled 19 tackles, one interception and had one reception for 22 yards for the Bluejays. He also had 120 rushes for 861 yards. He also scored 10 touchdowns.
Marcus Bauman

Big 7 All League First Team Defensive Back, Sports in Kansas All State First Team Defensive Back, KSHSAA Covered Honorable Mention Defensive Back
Throughout the 2022 season, Marcus totaled 38 tackles, one interceptions and had 14 receptions for 261 yards for the Bluejays. He also had one rush for six yards. He also scored three touchdowns.
Tyler Menold

Throughout the 2022 season, Tyler totaled 39 tackles, 3-1/2 quarterback sacks and one fumble recovery.

During the 2022 season, Josh tallied 19 tackles and two quarterback sacks. He also was the anchor Sabetha offensive line.
Jacob Grimm

During the 2022 season, Jacob —who was the anchor on the Sabetha line — tallied 39 tackles, one quarterback sack an two fumble recoveries. He also scored one touchdown.
Christian McAfee

Throughout the 2022 season, Christian totaled 85 tackles, one quarterback sack, one interception and one fumble recovery. He also tallied 11 receptions for 202 yards and 12 rushes for 95 yards for the Bluejays. He also scored seven touchdowns.
Cross Country
The Sabetha Bluejay Cross Country team opened their season on Saturday, Sept. 3, at Marysville and concluded their season by sending two boy harriers to the State meet on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Lawrence.
During the season, the boys’ team placed second at the Marysville Invitational. During the season, the girls’ team placed third at the Hiawatha Invitational.
Kalvin Evans
Junior
Big 7 All League First Team
During the 2022 season, Kalvin placed fourth in two meets and fifth in two meets — including the Big 7 League meet at Jeff West. Kalvin competed in the 3A State race and finished in 50th place overall. His best time for the season was 17 minutes, 24.99 seconds at the Marysville.
Laura Metzger

Big 7 All League First Team
During the 2022 season, Laura placed in second at one meet, third at two meets — including the Big 7 League meet at Jeff West — and fourth at one meet. Her best time for the season was 21 minutes, 55.2 seconds at the Big 7 League meet at Jeff West.
Charlie Lukert
Freshman
Big 7 All League First Team
During the 2022 season, Charlie placed third at two meets, fourth at three meets and fifth at one meet. Charlie finished his season at the 3A State Championship race at Rim Rock in Lawrence, where he placed 21st overall. His best time for the season was 16 minutes, 58.34 seconds at the 3A State Championship.
Jyllian Stapleton
Freshman
Big 7 All League First Team
During the 2022 season, Jyllian placed in the top 10 at two meets — including the Big 7 League meet — where she placed eighth. Her best time for the season was 23 minutes, 21.1 seconds at the Big 7 League meet at Jeff West.
Tennis
The Lady Jays Tennis team opened their season on Thursday, Aug. 25, in Wamego and concluded their season at the 3A Regional meet on Friday, Oct. 7, in Marysville.
The tennis team placed first at the Hayden meet on Sept. 12.
Competing in the 3A Regional competition for Sabetha at Marysville were seniors Sam Arnold, GracieAnn Glaspie and Kate Beyer, and sophomores Audrey Tramp, Karsyn Meyer and McKenna Gatz.
