Home is where the heart is, Sunderland returns to his roots

Attorney Luke Sunderland stands outside his new office Monday, December 19, on Main Street in Sabetha.

Homecomings offer such a sense of comfort, when one can relish familiar sights and reconnect with family and friends. It is particularly  fulfilling when you can return home and start a business to serve your community, family, neighbors and friends. Luke Sunderland has enjoyed such a homecoming and has started his new law practice in his hometown of Sabetha.

“It feels great to be back, and my wife and I have settled in well,” Luke said. “I am very grateful for the many big welcomes that have been extended to us.”

Luke said since he decided to go to law school, the plan has always been to come back to Sabetha.

“Opening my own law practice in Sabetha has been a plan of mine since I decided to go to Law School in 2019,” Luke said. “I particularly enjoyed spending my last two summers as a legal intern in Martin Mishler’s office in Sabetha, and it showed me the many interesting fields of law I can get involved in. I also found great joy in helping lifelong friends and neighbors navigate legal questions.”

Areas of Emphasis

Luke will focus most of his attention to wills and estates, trusts, business formation and organization, criminal defense and property. While, he will focus his attention on the aforementioned, he is also committed to aiding anyone in answering any legal questions as they are presented or referrals that are provided.

“Serving in a rural area, I have a general practice rather than heavily specializing in any one specific area of law,” Luke said. “We do have a primary focus on business formation, real estate transactions, estate planning, probate and trust administration.”

Formation of a Partnership

Luke and Martin Mishler opened their partnership at the beginning of September of this year.

“Martin [Mishler] and I have entered a partnership agreement to operate a law practice together, but we also have our own professional associations. This allows us both flexibility and also enables us to pool our resources to aid the other,” Luke said.

Luke is also serving as Assistant City Attorney, in partnership with Martin, for Fairview, Sabetha and Seneca.
