Obituary: Anna Christman

Anna Marie “Ann” Christman, 102, of Sabetha, passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.
Ann was born on Oct. 26, 1920, in Kelly, Kan., to Henry and Josephene (Schultejans) Niehues. She attended school at Kelly. On Nov. 23, 1943, she married Wilfred Henry Christman at Kelly.
Ann spent her early married years farming and operating a gas station. In 1941, she and Wilfred moved to Sabetha, and she worked in the home. Eventually, she opened Christman Upholstery. For much of her married life, she and Wilfred collected antiques and restored furniture. Ann operated Christman Upholstery until 2007.
Ann was an active member of the Sabetha BPW, Sacred Heart Altar Society, the SDCCW and many other Catholic organizations. She volunteered for many civic events including bloodmobiles and election counting. Ann and Wilfred served for 21 years as extraordinary Eucharistic ministers to the nursing homes and hospital in Sabetha.
Ann was an excellent cook, made the best pies in the world, and kept her grandchildren and great-grandchildren well-supplied with Christmas cookies and cinnamon rolls every year. Ann’s home was full of love, great food and family on every holiday. No one in the family wanted to miss a holiday at Grandma’s house.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred, on Dec. 2, 2007; her daughter, Donna Marie (Christman) Judah; and her son-in-law, Robert Hoffman.
Ann is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Hoffman of Wamego; her two sons, Ron (Debby) Christman of Wales, Wisc., and Jim (Sue) Christman of DuBois, Neb.; her son-in-law, Jim Judah of Kansas City, Mo.; her 11 grandchildren; and her 22 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha. A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Following visitation, a rosary will be prayed starting at 7 p.m. The interment will be in the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in Seneca, followed by a luncheon at Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Sabetha. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha, sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, Kansas 66534.
