Bluejays weather the Cyclones on the road

The Bluejays had the rubber match of Riverside on their schedule Tuesday, Jan. 31, and they traveled to Elwood to take on the 4-11 Cyclones. Sabetha took the win in their first match with Riverside in week two of the season, and they were looking to bring out the broom in the second meeting. The Jays held a narrow lead at the end of one quarter and catapulted to a 20-point advantage at the break. Sabetha would take the win, 70-33.

Senior Matthew Garber led the charge to open the contest and poured in 7 points, junior Christian McAfee had 5 and senior Davis Rokey had 4 points in the first quarter. The Jays led 18-12 at the end of the period.

Sabetha’s defense suffocated the Cyclones in the second quarter and allowed just 8 points to their hosts. Five Bluejay players tallied points in the period, with Garber dropping a pair of triples and leading his team with 10 points in the frame, and McAfee had 4 points. At the intermission, Sabetha took a 20-point lead into the locker room leading 40-20.

“We shot the ball well, shared the ball with our teammates and our defense was excellent,” said Head Coach Scott Burger.

Garber continued his tear in the second half, pouring in two additional three-balls and inking 10 points in the third quarter. The Bluejays kept the Cyclones off of the boards and eclipsed their opponent in rebound stats the entire night. Rokey pulled down 11 rebounds and McAfee had eight for the game. At the end of the night, the Jays had pulled down 37 boards to the Cyclones’ 22.

“We dominated the boards all night and kept their best two players in check,” Coach Burger said.

Sabetha led by 27 points headed into the fourth quarter and cruised to the win on the road, 70-33. Garber finished with 27 points, Rokey and McAfee each had 9, and seniors Preston Michael and Nohl Niehues finished with 7 and 6 points, respectively. Sabetha’s reserve players came in later in the contest and provided some quality minutes in the win.

“We had a very good game,” Coach Burger said. “Our bench came in and we didn’t lose a beat.”

Sabetha improves to 14-0 overall and 8-0 in the Big Seven and continues to hold the top spot in the league with six contests remaining in the regular season.
