Bluejays finish fourth, fifth at home invitational

The Sabetha Bluejay track and field team had a busy schedule this past week with two meets, one on the road and one at home. The Jays hosted their invitational meet on Thursday, May 4, with cool and rainy conditions, with 12 different teams participating, including Sabetha, Wetmore, Riverside, Kickapoo Nation, Maur Hill Mount Academy, Centralia, Horton, Auburn, Hiawatha, Nemaha Central, Holton and Marysville. The Lady Jays ended the day earning a fourth-place team finish and the Bluejay boys finished fifth overall.
“The timing of the rain and the fact this was the first meet of the year with prelims and finals in field events, kind of messed with the normal flow of a meet,” said Head Coach Dave Remmers. “Competition was very tough but should help us prepare better for the league meet next week.”
Girls
Junior sprinter Bayley Wasinger finished sixth in the 200-meter race and senior Mary Lukert took the silver medal in the 800-meter run.
In the distance races, sophomore Laura Metzger ran a strong race in the 1600-meter run to finish in fourth place, and sophomore Lauren Bowles earned a gold medal in the 3200-meter run.
The 4×100-meter relay team of freshmen Abby Whittaker, Samantha Schultejans and Krysta Menold along with Wasinger earned a fourth-place finish. Whittaker, Wasinger, K. Menold and M. Lukert took third in the 4×400-meter relay, and Whittaker, K. Menold, M. Lukert and Bowles finished with a bronze in the 4×800-meter relay.
Senior Halle Scoby continues to finish towards the top of the list of competitors in the throwing events and she took fourth in the shot and third in the discus.
Nemaha Central took the team title for the meet scoring 144 points, Marysville was second with 116 points, Holton finished third with 93 points followed by Sabetha in fourth with 59 points, then Centralia, Auburn, Hiawatha, Maur Hill Mount Academy, Wetmore, Horton, Riverside and Kickapoo Nation.
Boys
Freshman Charlie Lukert and sophomore Brody Deters continue to challenge and push each other in the 800-meter run, with Lukert finishing third in this meet followed by Deters in fourth. The duo also challenged the field in the 1600-meter race, with Lukert earning a bronze medal and Deters finished in fifth.
Junior Kalvin Evans ran a strong race in less than ideal conditions and finished in fourth place in the 3200-meter race.
Freshman Cole Menold has competed well in his meets thus far this season in the hurdles, and he earned a bronze medal in the 100-meter race and scored for his team in the 300-meter event when he finished sixth.
The team of Deters, juniors Cole Hinton and Nate Menold, and freshman Josh Enneking grabbed a fourth-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay.
Senior Drew Bestwick and junior Kalvin Evans finished in the top six in the pole vault, with Evans finishing fourth and Bestwick sixth.
In the throwing events, junior Joshua Grimm finished with a bronze in the shot put, and sophomore Luke Renyer tallied team points with a fifth-place finish. Grimm also took fourth place in the discus. Senior Davis Rokey took home a silver medal in the javelin event and his senior teammate Preston Michael had a sixth-place finish.
Marysville ran away with the boys’ team title scoring 143 points, followed by Holton in second with 121, Nemaha Central was third with 76, Hiawatha finished in fourth with 75 points, and Sabetha finished fifth in the field of two teams with 61 points recorded. Auburn was sixth followed by Horton, Centralia, Maur Hill Mount Academy, Kickapoo Nation, Riverside and Wetmore in descending team finishing.
“The weather forecast is showing rain every day next week, so hopefully we can take what we learned from Thursday and prepare for the possibility of similar conditions next week,” Coach Remmers said.
The Bluejays have one final regular season competition slated for Thursday, May 11, at Nemaha Central before they turn their attention to Regionals.
