Bluejays take top billing in Marysville

The Sabetha golfers quickly put the Holton meet in the rearview and turned their focus toward the Marysville Invitational Tournament held on Tuesday, May 2. The host school Marysville invited Sabetha, Concordia, Clay Center, Abilene, Seneca and Wamego. The Jays met some tough competitors, but the outcome produced three Sabetha medalists and another Bluejay tournament win.

“The weather was just like at Holton,” said Head Coach Scott Burger about the previous day’s meet with cool and breezy conditions. “This is always one of our favorite meets, as we play on a very nice course against many schools we don’t see during the year. Marysville played down everywhere, which made it more difficult for our players to score. It was an exciting day as we won by one stroke over Clay Center and Concordia.”

Junior Dalton Rokey was the top finisher for Sabetha and ended his day with a third-place medal for the meet. Junior Cole Grimes had a solid performance, and his score inked him in at a tie for fifth place and a medal. Junior Cullen Wikle hit the ball well and ended up in a four-way tie for seventh place, which was just five strokes out of the lead spot in a close grouping of top 10 finishers.

As to his play at Marysville and his success on the day, Wikle said, “I was taking more time before each shot and visualizing its path.”

Sophomore Roman Scoby notched his mark in the meet in a three-way tie for 21st place, and fellow sophomore teammate Caleb Renyer finished in a three-way tie for the 24th position. Junior Tyler Menold finished the day in 27th place in a field of 44 athletes.

With the meets of the regular season in the archives, the Bluejays turn their attention to the Big Seven Tournament, which will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, to be hosted by Jefferson West. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time.
