Bluejay golfers take Big Seven title

With the regular season contests in the archives now, the Bluejays turned their sights on their next biggest challenge, which was the Big Seven League meet on Wednesday, May 10, hosted by Jefferson West High School at Village Greens. Once again, the Jays rose to the occasion, had a first-place finisher, medaled five team members and took the team championship by more than 20 points.
“The weather was perfect and our golfers played very well,” said Head Coach Scott Burger. “Of the eight League medalists, we had five of them.”
Sophomore Roman Scoby topped the leader board at the end of the day in a two-way tie for first, finishing the round with a score of 79. Junior Cullen Wikle was on the heels of his teammate Scoby when he finished the meet with a score of 80 to put him in third place.
Juniors Cole Grimes and Dalton Rokey played well enough to land in the field of the top six places out of 37 athletes for the match. Grimes finished in fifth place with a tally of 84 and Rokey finished sixth with a round of 85.
Sophomore Caleb Renyer shot an 87, which put him in a four-way tie for seventh place, and junior Tyler Menold rounded out the day in a two-way tie for 12th place with a score of 93.
“I’m really proud of how this team has gotten mentally tougher as the year goes on,” Coach Burger said. “They handle adversity during the round and are able to right the ship when the storm hits.”
With a Big Seven championship in the books, the Bluejays will now focus their attention to the Regional competition.
