Kansas crop progress, condition as of May 14

For the week ending May 14, there were 4-1/2 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 31 percent very short, 34 percent short, 32 percent adequate and three percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 45 percent very short, 33 percent short, 21 percent adequate and one percent surplus.
Field Crops Report:
Winter wheat condition rated 34 percent very poor, 34 percent poor, 22 percent fair, nine percent good and one percent excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 87 percent, behind 92 percent last year, and near 91 percent for the five-year average. Headed was 54 percent, near 56 percent last year, but ahead of 49 percent average.
Corn planted was 61 percent, near 58 percent last year, and 62 percent average. Emerged was 36 percent, ahead of 26 percent last year, and near 34 percent average.
Soybeans planted was 42 percent, ahead of 30 percent last year, and 29 percent average. Emerged was 17 percent, ahead of 10 percent last year, and eight percent average.
Sorghum planted was seven percent, near five percent both last year and average.
Cotton planted was 35 percent, near 37 percent last year, but ahead of 21 percent average.
Sunflowers planted was one percent, near four percent last year, and five percent average.
Pasture and Range Report:
Pasture and range conditions rated 31 percent very poor, 29 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 12 percent good and one percent excellent.
