Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International held its monthly meeting at the Morrill Library in Hiawatha on Saturday, May 6. Those present were Karen Benson, Ruth Randall, Ardis Huston, Lucille Pennel, Anne Cash and Sue Miller, all of Hiawatha; Barbara Chadwell of Fairview; Carol Bishop of Axtell; Carol Bunning of Horton; Joyce Fee of Morrill; Mary Jane Fleming and Barbara Vitt, both of Seneca; and Betty Gleason of Atchison.

The program, “Where Would We Be Without Pollinators” was given by Nikki Tollefson of the Brown County Conservation District. It included who the pollinators are in the environment, their importance and how they are threatened. To conclude the programs, she had the members perform a fun, affective simulation of insect pollination using juice box “nectar,” straw “proboscis,” flower petal cutout and cheese ball “pollen.”

The business meeting was directed by President Bishop. A favorite flower was the topic for roll call which was led by Fee. Vitt shared discussions she had with the Nemaha County schools concerning sponsorship of the Nemaha County Spelling Bee. The chapter members then voted to discontinue AK sponsorship of the bee, but provide help to the county schools as they assume responsibility. A tribute to former chapter member Sue LaCounte was given by Pennel, who then gave readings for the Founders’ Day celebration.

After the meeting, the hostesses Miller, Randall and Cash served pie.
