Kansas crop progress, condition as of May 21

For the week ending May 21, there were four days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 18 percent very short, 34 percent short, 43 percent adequate and five percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 37 percent very short, 33 percent short, 29 percent adequate and one percent surplus.

Field Crops Report: Winter wheat condition rated 37 percent very poor, 32 percent poor, 21 percent fair, nine percent good and one percent excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 92 percent, behind 97 percent for both last year and the five-year average. Headed was 73 percent, behind 82 percent last year, and near 75 percent average.

Corn planted was 71 percent, near 74 percent last year, and 75 percent average. Emerged was 54 percent, ahead of 43 percent last year, and near 50 percent average.

Soybeans planted was 54 percent, ahead of 47 percent last year, and 42 percent average. Emerged was 31 percent, ahead of 22 percent last year, and 20 percent average.

Sorghum planted was 12 percent, near 10 percent last year, and nine percent average.

Cotton planted was 40 percent, well behind 66 percent last year, and equal to average.

Sunflowers planted was three percent, behind nine percent last year, and 11 percent average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 25 percent very poor, 25 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 14 percent good and one percent excellent.
