Study the word

“Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene.” 2 Timothy 2:14-17

This is the back-to-school season. Students of all ages will be going back to the classrooms and learning new and exciting things, we hope. Christians should be students of the word of God. Yet, we should not have a back-to-school season as believers but be continually learning and growing in our faith. Paul, here in 2 Timothy, is writing to Timothy about the need to accurately handle the word of God. This truth is timeless and something we all need to take note of because we are all called in the great commission by Jesus.

Paul says to “not to wrangle about words which leads to ruin.”

Today, like in the days of Paul, there are many false teachers. Their teaching cannot be reasoned with and could even bring “ruin” to those who hear the argument we might have with them. Debate has a time and a place, but we need to evaluate the situation because most debates do not change the minds of the person, we are debating but are of benefit to the listen only. This means choosing with the help of the Holy Spirit and with wisdom before engaging in a debate.

How do you feel about study of the Word of God? Are you excited, diligent and zealous about it? If we want to be used by God and to fulfill the calling, we all have, we need to be diligent in our study of the Word. The church members also need to know God’s word correctly for the building of a Godly church. Failure to know the word can bring ruin and shame to us and to the Lord’s church.

Warren Wiersbe says: “An approved worker diligently studies the Word and seeks to apply it to his own life. An ashamed worker wastes his time with other ‘religious duties’ and has little or nothing to give his class or congregation.”

An approved worker will use his time and words to benefit both the one he talks to and those around him. This means to also turn from godless chatter which has no benefit. Yet, he will take a stand against false teachings and teachers because like gangrene, false teaching spreads and kills. Approved workers will expose the false teaching and remove it because sound truth of the Word of God builds healthy churches.

How does a person diligently study the word of God? It starts with prayer and recognizing that the Bible is authoritative, and it is the very Words of God.

Next, we must seriously analyze the Word of God. This can be done by following these steps outlined by pastor and teacher Adrian Rogers: “Read the Bible in context, then read the Bible with common sense and finally read the Bible with concentration.”

Finally and most important, we apply it to our lives by living it and obey it. This final step is applying the word of God to our lives and to our churches as well.
