Locally written Christmas musical to premiere

What is Christmas? Jesus is Christmas! These two short sentences sum up the true meaning of Christmas. They are also the titles of two original Christmas songs in A Christian Christmas Carol, a musical written by longtime Brown County resident Patsy Lehew. Though she gives God all the glory for inspiring the words and music of this musical, it was her faithful listening and writing, and the help of friends and family that brought it to fruition.

Over a series of many nights in 1981 and 1982, Patsy awoke in the early morning hours with music in her heart, and a strong conviction that God was bringing her an important message to share. She got out of bed and sang the music she was hearing into a tape recorder.

“Pastor Tom Stone and Vickie helped me transcribe the music from the tapes,” Patsy said.

She then notated the songs, and carefully typed out the dialogue as it was given to her in her early morning prayers. She also listed the scriptures that she felt God had placed on her heart to include in the script. The result was A Christian Christmas Carol, a four-act, full cast Christmas musical, with ten original songs, Christian dialogue, a message of Salvation, and the true Gospel Christian message of Jesus Christ in scripture. In 1982, the musical was performed three times in Horton, during the Christmas season.

This is the cover of the Christian Christmas Carol written by Patsy Lehew.

Now, 40 years later, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, the musical will be performed again, in the auditorium of Hiawatha High school. Cast members and crew include talented area performers of all ages, many of them members of several local churches. The musical score was edited and arranged in 2022 for full orchestra by Mr. Spencer Fleury and Mr. Scott Leach, music majors at the College of the Ozarks in Branson, Mo.

The musical script, orchestral score and piano rehearsal score are all available to download and print, free of charge. Recorded orchestrated backing tracks are available via YouTube, and are free to use. If you would like to download a PDF copy of the play, and a link to the YouTube files of rehearsal music, please send an email to shanespangler@yahoo.com, with the words “A Christian Christmas Carol Script” in the subject line.

“Anyone may have this play, free of charge, as long as they don’t change any of the words,” Patsy said. “The Salvation message is the most important message God has given the world, and it must be presented as written, in full.”

This musical has been a labor of love for Patsy and her family for more than 42 years. The reason for all her work is simple.

She said, “If this play helps to save just one soul for Jesus, it will be worth it.”
