FINISH VICTORIOUS SEASON. Sabetha Football Eleven Wins Last Game From Seneca Thursday. The Sabetha football team one of the most successful and outstanding elevens produced here in years, probably ever, finished its 1925 season under Coach E. L. Lyons Thursday, Thanksgiving day, by defeating Seneca high school on the Sabetha gridiron by a score of 27 to 7.

Reuben Steiner, 16 year old son of E. H. Steiner shucked 134 bushels of corn in one day. This was measured by weight allowing 75 pounds per bushel.

The football fans were all listening in on the radio Thursday afternoon to the Nebraska-Notre Dame football game at Lincoln, which was won 17 to 0 by Nebraska.

The St. Anthony Hospital Guild for the fifth consecutive year will sponsor its annual Christmas project, a canned food and fruit shower for the Sabetha hospital. All people and organizations of the community, as well as Guild members, are invited to remember St. Anthony this Christmas with contributions, large or small, to the shower.

Clarence Ellington brought a copy of an old army paper, National Tribune, to The Herald office this week. The copy is dated Feb. 10, 1887, and was sent to S. R. Machamer, former Sabethan who built the house where Mr. Ellington now lives at the north end of Ninth street. Mr. Ellington reports that he discovered about 25 of the old copies in the attic of the house. Although the paper is torn at the folds and slightly yellow the print is still clear and can easily be read. The paper was published weekly in Washington, D. C.

The general outlook for oil production around Sabetha was probably at its lowest ebb this morning since before the discovery made by Carter Oil Company’s Mamie Strahm No. 2 last April. The dejection grows from several factors.

PUBLIC HEARING ON COMMUNITY PROJECT. The general public is invited and encouraged to attend a public hearing to be conducted by the City Commissioners of Sabetha on Monday, December 1, 1975, at 4 p.m. in the City Hall, 805 main St. The primary purpose of the hearing is to describe and hear views of citizens on the pre-application for federal funds, to make eligible improvements under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.

With the first snow having arrived and the holiday street decorations up, the Sabetha Chamber of Commerce announces the annual merchant window opening event will be held this Friday evening, Nov. 28th, from 7 to 9 p.m. The pattern will be similar to past years as merchants will close at the regular time on Friday and have their display windows covered. The city siren will blow at 7 p.m. signifying the grand unveiling of the holiday wares. As an added plus many merchants will be offering a 10 percent discount on all purchases made during this two hour period and several will also be conducting special contests of their own. Shoppers will also have a chance for free refreshments at both the Farmers State Bank and Peoples Savings and Loan.

A large crack in the Mary Cotton Public Library’s south wall has been a primary topic at two recent Sabetha City Commission meetings. The crack reportedly developed last summer during extreme drought conditions.

Texas Gov. George W. Bush was certified the winner on Sunday in Florida’s presidential vote — and therefore the nation’s next president — but Vice President Al Gore still begs to differ.

After losing almost all of his experienced varsity players to graduation, one would think Sabetha High School boys basketball coach Robbie Koerperich would be worried — even alarmed — this preseason. But the combination of strong talent potential for the 2000-2001 Sabetha team and the shortfall of seasoned veterans on many other fellow Big Seven League rosters keeps Koerperich optimistic.

Ice causes several power outages. Crystal-like icicles dangle from tree branches and buildings, creating a picturesque wintery scene. For some, this picture was frozen in periods of darkness. Rain fell in many areas throughout the state over Thanksgiving weekend. With the cold temperatures, the rain froze, covering many areas with ice. The ice storm brought with it problems with power outages as iced-over branches broke from trees and fell into power lines. Sabetha, along with many cities in the state, lost power on more than one occasion throughout the holiday weekend.

Two local youth compete Sunday, November 28, in the Chiefs Team Competition of Punt, Pass and Kick at the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice facility. Joe Gruber, left, competed in the 14- and 15-year-old boys’ division, placing third. Kaleb Evans, right, competed in the 12- and 13-year-old boys’ division, placing second. Both Gruber and Evans qualified by winning the local competition in Sabetha and sectional competition in Tonganoxie.
