Letter: Former resident appreciates kindness during recent visit
Dear Editor,
My sister Vicki and I could not have picked a worse day than Sunday, Dec. 28, to drive to Sabetha to meet our sister, Lesta, and niece, Debby, who drove from Omaha. We came to take Lesta, who is visiting from California, back to Lawrence for a four day visit. It was snowing and bitterly cold with high winds and gusts up to 50 miles per hour. To complicate matters, Vicki, who customarily uses a mobility scooter, was forced to use a transfer wheelchair because I could not load her scooter into my car.
Enter the world’s three nicest people: two ladies who made it their mission to see we were safely into our car and a man from Sidelines Bar and Grill — where we had lunch — who brought out salt so Vicki could stand on the slick street to transfer into the back seat of my car. I didn’t get their names, but if they read this, they will know how grateful we are. I think the ladies questioned the wisdom of our travel in such bad weather, but the good news is that Debby made it safely back to Omaha and we three sisters made it safely home to Lawrence.
We have fond memories of Sabetha where our grandparents, A.M. and Ruth Henry, lived and where I attended kindergarten through half of second grade during World War II, while my Ranger father fought in Africa and Europe. I am told that Grandpa employed many men in his scrapyard during both the Depression and the war. He was also a furrier and bought hides from trappers throughout the area and even had a trapper in Alaska who sent furs to him.
Again, my sincere appreciation to the three Sabetha residents who took a very kind interest in seeing us safely off to our destinations.
Marsha Henry Goff
