Christmas Greeting: At the approach of this, our twenty-third Christmas in Sabetha, we deem it appropriate that we should express our gratification at the appreciation with which our efforts during all these years to keep pace with the growing requirements of our trade has been met. We extend to all our customers earnest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, with the assurance that, if life and health are vouchsafed us, the dawning and growth of the new Century will find this house abreast of the times and fully prepared to meet the ever-increasing demand for high-grade, up-to-date goods at lowest prices. Respectfully, H. E. & E. S. Haines

Frank Deaver came in the first of the week to spend Christmas at home. He has been on the road for a Chicago publishing house. His work seems to have agreed with him, as he looks in much better health than when he left.

I have an elegant new line of watches, clocks, silverware, rings, chains, brooches, pins, buttons, gold pens, spectacles, etc., all suitable for Christmas presents. Call and see them. FRED DUBACH, The South Side Jeweler.

Federal Road Over $6,000 a Mile. The federal aid highway from Oneida to Seneca will cost between $6,000 and $7,000 a mile. The cost of the highway will be approximately $50,000 minus the new Nemaha river and Harris creek bridges. The Monarch Engineering Company of Falls City and L. O. Hales of Topeka are the low bidders.

Married at Sabetha Hospital. Miss Lila A. Roseberry of Powhattan, who was operated for appendicitis a week ago, was united in marriage Tuesday evening, December 15 at 4:30 at St. Anthony hospital to Mr. Hurl A. Hurst of Baker. Rev. E. L. Painter was the officiating minister.

High School Records Protected. A fireproof vault has been installed in the principal’s office of Sabetha high school, where all records are kept in perfect safety. The vault replaces wooden files. In this safe are the records of high school work for many years back. Prof. Marks will revise and re-organize all these records during the Christmas vacation.

Negotiations were in the final stages this morning for Sabetha to have a new sewage disposal plant as the city commissioners met with members of the Nemaha Co-operative Creamery of Sabetha. Construction of the plant by the Pre-stressed Concrete Corporation of Kansas City is already under way on the Harold Scoby farm about a quarter of a mile south of the junction of Oregon Street and Third Street.

Although Lt. Col. Charles H. Browne, Jr., said last week that units of the National Guard which he commands, including Sabetha’s Battery A, have received no official notice of any pending mobilization, there seems every indication the 35th division, which embraces the northeast Kansas units, will be in service before long.

The Carter Oil Co. is continuing its efforts to make as good a well as possible from the Parli No. 2 in the Mamie Strahm field. A spudder still is working at the site and during the past week, has re-perforated at the middle Hunton zone and acidized with a thousand gallons.

What many folks believe was a cluster of tornados hit this area late Saturday night with several reports of minor damage and one injury. Minor Brooks, a truck driver from Haskell, Okla., was taken to the Sabetha Community Hospital after his semi trailer truck was literally blown off U.S. 75 Highway five miles north of town. His truck was empty at the time of the unusual accident. Mr. Brooks reported his truck traveled some 200 feet in the air before crashing to the ground. There was extensive damage to the unit, but Mr. Brooks’ injuries were not believed to be serious.

WATER LINE BREAKS. Several businesses on the north side of the middle business block in Sabetha were having water troubles Monday morning. A water line had broken. Greene’s Drug Store reported 14 inches of water in their basement and no heat early Monday. Heating service was restored and the water leak was being repaired Monday morning.

There were 18 Sabetha Santas discovered this past week. Those receiving $10 gift certificates from the Chamber of Commerce were Harlan Bailey, Cynthia Clark, Nathan Grimm, E. L. White, Donna Moser, Jeff Matson, Kathy Surdez, Doug Hartter, Roger Hartter, Helen Johnstone, Jim Hicks, Sandy Matney, Jerry McFall, Mrs. Joey Meyer, Mrs. Betty Niehues, Julie Niehues, Kenneth Carpenter and Tony Renyer.

New construction in Nemaha County primarily accounted for the just under $4 million increase in assessed valuation in the county from 1999 to 2000, according to Steve Strahm, a data collector in the office of the Nemaha County Appraiser.

Schwab-Eaton engineer Chris Cox, the city’s consultant for the proposed waste water stabilization pond, to be constructed on property southwest of Sabetha, talked with City Commissioners at the Monday, Dec. 18 meeting. Cox told commissioners that the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has basically placed the sewage lagoon project on hold.

The northeast Kansas counties of Nemaha, Marshall, Jackson and Pottawatomie remain in the grip of a chronic, severe drought, despite three December storms that have brought needed snowfall to the area.

The Sabetha Event Center – now officially known as “The Main Event” – is a multipurpose facility that has served the citizens of Sabetha for the past several years. The building at 16 Main Street has served as a gathering place for wedding receptions, family reunions, work events, craft shows, the Sabetha High School After Prom party and other community events. It also houses offices for NEK-CAP Headstart. Until August 2015, Headstart preschool classes also were held in the building.
