More than a scoreboard: seniors honored in final home game

Senior Night is always about more than the scoreboard, and on Monday, Feb. 23, the Sabetha Lady Jays made sure to honor their seniors with effort, toughness, and pride despite a difficult match-up against rival Nemaha Central Thunder. Sabetha fell 51-27 in their final home game of the season, but the night still carried meaning for a group that refused to quit.

Sabetha got off to a promising start when senior Kiera Keim knocked down a corner three off good ball movement to open the scoring. From there, however, the first half proved to be a struggle. Nemaha Central’s defensive pressure disrupted Sabetha’s rhythm, forcing turnovers and making it difficult for the Lady Jays to get into any kind of offensive flow. Sabetha managed just a few scoring opportunities in the half, including free throws from senior Alivia Lang and junior Sophia Haverkamp, and trailed 33-5 at the break.

The second half, though, told a much different story.

Rather than folding, Sabetha came out with renewed energy and purpose. Keim scored Sabetha’s first field goal since the opening moments of the game, setting the tone for a stronger stretch of basketball. Senior Chloe Detweiler followed with a tough post move through traffic, and Keim capped a three-possession run with a crafty reverse layup. Senior Izzy Scoby added a highlight of her own, delivering a sharp entry pass to junior Sidney Schubarth for a basket inside.

While the deficit remained, Sabetha continued to compete and find positives. The Lady Jays showed improved ball movement, better spacing, and more confidence offensively. Michael found her rhythm from beyond the arc, connecting on three treys in the second half, while Keim added another triple to finish with a team-high 12 points. Michael followed closely with 9 points.

Most importantly, the night belonged to the seniors. All six seniors — Samantha Schultejans, Izzy Scoby, Kiera Keim, Alivia Lang, Krysta Menold and Chloe Detweiler — saw the floor and provided meaningful minutes, setting an example with their effort and leadership in the final home game of their careers.

“These seniors finished well,” said Head Coach Rachelle Wertenberger. “That says more about who they are as people than anything else. It has been an honor and privilege to coach this group of seniors. I’m thankful for the foundation of attitude and effort they have set for us.”

While the final score was not what Sabetha hoped for, Senior Night served as a reminder of the character and resilience of this group. Against a tough rival, the Lady Jays kept competing, supported one another and finished the game the right way — together.
