On Thursday, July 23, Governor Laura Kelly appointed Ashlyn Yarnell of Shawnee to a judgeship position in the 10th Judicial District. The vacancy was created by the retirement of Judge David W. Hauber.

“Ashlyn has a strong and impressive background, particularly in family law,” Governor Kelly said. “She’s long been an advocate for children and families in her private practice, and I am confident she will bring that same passion and deep experience to the bench.”

Yarnell is a non-equity partner at Nelson & Yarnell. She has also served as Pro Tem in the 10th Judicial District. Yarnell is currently the President-Elect for the Johnson County Bar Association. She is also a volunteer investigator with the Johnson County Ethics and Grievance Committee and is a Member of the Johnson County Family Law Inn of Court and the Johnson County Bar Foundation.

“Serving as a District Court Judge is a tremendous honor, and I will strive every day to be worthy of that responsibility,” Yarnell said. “An even greater honor is the privilege of listening to the people of Johnson County and helping to resolve the matters they bring before the court.”

District court judges in the 10th Judicial District are appointed by the governor and selected from among nominees chosen by a district nominating commission. Judges in nominating commission districts are subject to retention elections every four years. The two other nominees selected by the district nominating commission were John McEntee and Curtis Sample.
