Reports of scam calls

Many local scam calls are being reported threatening legal action if the calls are not immediately returned. Callers are targeting mostly elderly individuals in our county. When the call is not answered, there is a message left informing the resident they will call back again and if they do not answer or return their call immediately — legal action will follow such as warrants or arrest. This is alarming our elderly residents as they fear legal action will be taken upon them.

Multiple calls are made to residents in hopes they will pick up. One person who did answer was encouraged to send payment for outstanding legal action or they would be arrested. They hung up and were immediately contacted again.

I want residents to know that the best advice is to not answer your phones unless you know the number. Make sure you know and verify who you are talking with, because recognizable numbers can be cloned. Immediately hang up if you do not recognize the party that has contacted you. If you have a message on your voicemail that is asking you to return a call, the safest thing is not returning the call.

Hope this helps!
