E. V. Kauffmann, proprietor of Sycamore Mineral Springs, has just made his report to the government bureau of statistics at Washington for the past year. During the year 567 people took treatment at the Springs, and he shipped to other points 5,200 gallons of the water. The demand in both branches of his business increases just as fast as the merit of the water becomes known.
I understand that some parties have been circulating the report that I have neglected to be on the streets at night in attendance to my duties. Therefore I request the parties that hire and pay me to watch and see for themselves whether I fail to do my duty or not. F. M. BRIDGEMAN.
So far the ice crop has been just a little scarcer than hen’s teeth on account of the extremely mild winter weather. But Kansas weather is liable to go on a rampage some fine day and make us all inquire “how about the ice man now?”

During the January Sabetha-Wetmore school board meeting, the board discussed whether to renovate the Wetmore Attendance Center or build a new facility in Wetmore. WAC Principal Tim Weis mentioned that there had been talk about the state’s requiring all high schools with fewer than 100 students to be consolidated into larger districts. The Wetmore facility serves 212 grade K-12 students, but only 62 of those are high school students. A Denver firm, Augenblick & Myers, recently completed a 15-month study that recommends reorganizing the state’s 304 school districts by reducing the number of districts by up to 49 districts. But Wetmore’s name wasn’t on the list.

Fire District No. 4 hopes all goes well next week at a public hearing set for Monday, Jan. 25. The hearing was set after Tim Krehbiel, Jason Rokey and Eldon Kaster with the Bern Fire Department came before the Nemaha County Commission on Monday, Jan. 11, to let Commissioners know that they wanted to apply for a KAN STEP Grant in order to build a new fire barn in Bern.
The second outage of the year occurred around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16. The outage affected the areas of Sabetha, Bern, Axtell, Oneida, Berwick and Richmond. Though Westar Energy restored power to Sabetha in a little over two hours, some areas experienced a longer outage period. We started our generators and all power was restored in Sabetha in about an hour,” said City Administrator Doug Allen. A top 34 kV phase line south of Bern fell into a bottom phase line, causing the outage, Allen said. Westar spokeswoman Gina Penzig further explained that the outage was a result of a failed insulator. Crews made permanent repairs that morning.
