Lady Jays battle wire-to-wire in home loss to Holton
The Sabetha Lady Jays welcomed the Holton Wildcats to town on Friday, Feb. 20, in what turned into a physical, hard-fought contest from start to finish. Despite staying within striking distance all night, Sabetha came up just short in a 47-37 loss that was closer than the final score indicated.
Holton set the early tone, opening the game as the aggressor and jumping out to an 8-2 lead. Sabetha responded with confidence and toughness, igniting a 9-1 run that flipped the momentum. Junior Macey Drahota got things started by working hard on the offensive glass for her first bucket of the night. Junior Sidney Schubarth followed with a strong drive from the top of the key, finishing through contact for a layup. Junior Sophia Haverkamp then stretched the defense by burying a deep three-pointer, giving the Lady Jays control and energy early.
Sabetha continued to play solid basketball in the second quarter, leaning on inside scoring and steady execution. Drahota finished around the rim, while Schubarth went two-for-two from the free-throw line and added a smooth reverse layup to keep the Lady Jays in rhythm. Even with Sabetha playing well, Holton consistently had an answer and refused to let the home team pull away.
The Wildcats ended the half with a pair of unlikely three-pointers — one that rattled around the rim before finally dropping, and another banked-in prayer. Those shots proved to be the difference at halftime, as Sabetha found itself trailing 20-15 despite a strong opening half.
The Lady Jays came out of the locker room in the third quarter playing with urgency and grit. Schubarth set the tone by following her own miss and finishing through traffic at the rim, then on the next possession delivered a perfectly-timed pass to senior Chloe Detweiler for an easy two. Senior Kiera Keim turned defense into offense with a steal and coast-to-coast finish, and then added a three-pointer to keep the pressure on.
Sophomore RaeLynn Lanter made her presence felt at the line, knocking down three free throws, while junior Paxton Michael connected from beyond the arc. Sabetha’s toughness on both ends of the floor was evident as they closed the gap to just 1 point, trailing 31-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately for the Lady Jays, shots became hard to come by in the final frame. Aside from three made free throws by Schubarth, Sabetha struggled to get the ball to fall. Holton took advantage, knocking down a pair of timely three-pointers and converting at the free-throw line when it mattered most to create separation late.
“It was a tough loss, but it’s something we can grow from as a team,” Lanter said.
Schubarth led all scorers with 11 points while also contributing four rebounds, three assists and three steals in a well-rounded effort. Lanter led the Lady Jays on the glass with seven rebounds, continuing to provide energy and impact off the bench.
“Playing varsity has shown me how much faster and more physical the game is,” Lanter said. “I just focus on bringing energy and doing the small things that help our team, especially on defense.”
Though the outcome didn’t go their way, Sabetha proved once again that they can compete for four quarters and that effort and toughness continue to define their growth.
